ChronoSens

Optimized building management

Knowing the right time to clear snow from the roof of your buildings can be a real headache!! ChronoSens uses state of the art engineering systems to determine when preventive maintenance is needed for optimal management of roof snow removal in Quebec. This enables you to make the right snow removal decisions, reducing the costs associated with unnecessary snow removal when it is not needed, and promoting optimal preventive maintenance. This gives you peace of mind in the face of extreme weather events brought on quickly by climate change.

Analyse of needs

Our engineering team first performs an analysis of your building, considering its size, orientation and other relevant factors in order to determine specific sensor and gateway requirements.

Installation

Each sensor is strategically and securely positioned within the steel structure of the ceiling. These can then capture precise data on the structure’s stress level, in real time, depending on snow, water or ice accumulation.

Commissioning

Once everything is in place, the ChronoSens system not only provides real-time data, but also cross-references it with weather forecasts to predict potential roof loading over the next 7 days. The building manager can manage his settings to generate a preventative alert, enabling him or her to decide to call a maintenance team at the right time.

Achievements

Images of our projects are available in real time, and are given to you in their entirety at the end of the project. They are also archived and available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Frequently asked questions

The technology solution we offer uses engineering data to provide accurate predictions based on building history. You can optimize your operations by targeting areas with high snow accumulation and centralize access to the loads of all the buildings you manage.

ChronoSens technology avoids unnecessary snow removal by evaluating the need in real time. You can avoid the expense of premature snow removal and more expensive emergency snow removal. In addition, it eliminates the continual need to schedule inspection rounds to assess the snow accumulation on the roof, thus reducing building maintenance costs.

ChronoSens makes it possible to move from a reactive approach to a preventive approach to maintenance, which preserves the value of the building by reducing its premature wear. Roof inspections are down, which increases its lifespan by limiting the potential damage caused by interventions.

Weather events are increasingly unpredictable and intense. ChronoSens' sensors enable infrastructure to adapt to environmental challenges and help deal with these changes in a safe and efficient manner.

By facilitating the implementation and monitoring of good building maintenance practices, the ChronoSens solution contributes to the preservation of snow removal know-how. You are no longer solely dependent on experienced staff whose knowledge could be lost when they leave.

By making informed decisions based on real-time data, you reduce the risk of accidents or injuries related to unnecessary snow removal. You protect the safety of building occupants and snow removal personnel, while preventing potential roof damage and cave-ins.

No, our technological solution can be useful 12 months out of the year. It can also be used to assess the accumulation of water after a heavy rain. A stagnant load, detected by our sensors, on the roof may indicate poor drainage. ChronoSens sensors monitor these conditions and obtain real-time data to take the necessary measures to prevent the repetitive accumulation of water from damaging the roof.

The depth of snow visible on a roof is not sufficient to reliably assess the risks of overloading. The same depth of snow can have different weights, and this will affect the roof differently.

Also, it is important to note that snow can mask the presence of underlying ice. When snow partially melts and turns to ice, it can significantly increase the load on the roof. Therefore, a full-overload risk assessment must consider factors such as snow density, the presence of hidden ice, and other environmental conditions.

With ChronoSens, you have the precise picture of what your roof can withstand and the actions to take to avoid both costly remedial work and/or a catastrophic roof failure.

The number of sensors required depends on several factors such as the size and configuration of the roof, as well as the organization's experience with snow accumulation. On average, between 8 and 12 sensors are installed, but the exact number will be determined after an in-depth analysis of the specific needs of each building.

For most projects, a single gateway is sufficient for communication between the sensors and the ChronoSens servers. However, in some situations where there are obstacles to the transmission of radio waves, such as metal walls or refrigerated areas, it may be necessary to install one or two additional gateways.

The installation time depends on the size of the project and the accessibility of the ceiling to the sensor locations. Typically, installation takes about 30-60 minutes per sensor. One day is usually enough for an entire installation, but this can vary depending on the complexity of each project.

For the installation of ChronoSens sensors, it is necessary to have lifting equipment such as a lifting platform, an aerial lift, and/or a stepladder. If you already have the equipment on site, this can reduce acquisition and project implementation costs. Otherwise, the ChronoSens team will take care of bringing the necessary equipment when indicated in the agreement.

Although structural plans are useful, they are not essential. ChronoSens can carry out an analysis based on other information such as the year of construction of the building, subsequent additions and structural readings taken after the installation of the sensors.

A ChronoSens system cost can vary according to several factors such as the size of the building, the presence of equipment on the roof and the area to be covered. Each project is unique, and costs will be assessed based on these parameters. It is recommended to contact ChronoSens to obtain a personalized quote.
